Film tells story of Angola 3

Lincoln Center’s Walter Reade Theater was packed on June 16 and 17 for the New York premiere of the documentary “In the Land of the Free,” which tells the chilling story of the Angola 3 — members of the Black Panther Party who were targeted for their struggle against atrocious conditions at the hellhole known as Angola penitentiary in Louisiana. A highlight of the event was the presence of Robert King, one of the original three, who was released from Angola in 2001.

Herman Wallace and Albert Woodfox remain incarcerated there, convicted of the murder of a prison guard despite no physical evidence and no credible eyewitnesses. In photo, King signs copies of his autobiography, “From the Bottom of the Heap,” which was published by PM Press. He said after his release, “I’m free of Angola but Angola is not free of me,” and continues to fight for his comrades’ freedom.
