Fresh clashes between South Sudan's forces and rebels in the troubled Jonglei state have left at least 24 troopers dead and several others injured or missing.

The violence broke out on Thursday in the Pibor region of Jonglei where forces had been investigating sightings of rebel leader David Yau Yau.

“There were 24 reported killed from the SPLA (South Sudan People's Liberation Army) and 12 wounded, and there are about 17 missing,” AFP quoted Jonglei governor Kuol Manyang as saying on Sunday.

The official added that the attack was launched by a group, including “men in uniform.”

Jonglei was one of the areas, hardest hit in Sudan's 1983-2005 north-south conflict.

South Sudan became independent on July 9, 2011 after decades of conflict with the north. The new oil-rich nation is one of the least-developed countries in the world where one in every seven children dies before the age of five.
