Latin American leaders have paid tribute to late Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez, honoring him for his efforts to promote independence and integration in the region.

Latin American leaders including Argentinean President Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner, President Dilma Rousseff of Brazil, President Daniel Ortega of Nicaragua, Uruguayan President Jose Mujica, President Enrique Pena Nieto of Mexico, and Colombian President Juan Manuel Santos, have already announced that they would attend the funeral of Chavez in the Venezuelan capital, Caracas, on Friday.

Hugo Chavez died at hospital in Caracas on March 5, after a two-year battle with cancer.

Venezuelans began seven days of national mourning on Wednesday.

Chavez founded the movement of Bolivarian Revolution to establish popular democracy and economic independence and equitably distribute wealth in Latin America.

The Bolivarian Alliance for the Americas (ALBA) said in a statement on Thursday, “Never before in the history of our America has a president [done] so much in such a short lifetime for the integration and unity of our continent.” Chavez “will remain forever in the poor’s hearts.”

Meanwhile, Mercosur, which is a major Latin American regional economic bloc, said, “The best tribute we can pay to him is to preserve his legacy to advance integration.”

Venezuela’s Foreign Minister Elias Jaua has announced that Vice President Nicolas Maduro would take charge as interim president. A presidential election is expected to be called within 30 days.
