Superstorm Sandy which devastated the Jersey shore and New York City in October has shown the “incapacity” of the U.S. government to address such disasters, says Abayomi Azikiwe, editor of Pan-African News Wire.

According to the Washington Post, Super Storm Sandy was the largest Atlantic hurricane on record, as well as the second-costliest Atlantic hurricane in history, only surpassed by Hurricane Katrina in 2005.

Six months after the storm hit the East Coast of the United States, the region is still dealing with slow and frustrating recovery and tens of thousands of people remain homeless.

“The Sandy Hook storm, which hit New York City late last year, is a clear illustration of the incapacity of the national government inside the United States to address these types of disasters,” said Azikiwe in a phone interview with the U.S. Desk on Sunday.

According to the Wall Street Journal, New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie has estimated that 39,000 New Jersey families remain displaced.

Moreover, in New York, over 250 families are still living in hotel rooms, with others still shacking up with relatives or living in temporary rentals.

“Many of the people who were involved in doing relief work for the victims of the storm were volunteers [like] people from Occupy Wall Street who had set up another organization called Occupy Sandy,” said Azikiwe.

“This has to be corrected inside the United States as we have an escalation of these types of so-called national disasters. There has to be a mechanism, there has to be a system, in order to provide relief to many people,” he added.
