Judgement Debts Commission Doubts Genuineness of Documents for 1965 Akosombo Dam Compensation Claims

Ghana Broadcasting Corporation

The Sole Commissioner looking into the payment of judgement debts and related matters, Justice Yao Apau, says documents presented to the commission by families whose lands were submerged during the construction of the Akosombo Dam in 1965 are not genuine.

Justice Apau said this when representatives of the beneficiary families appeared before the commission to help ascertain the processes and procedures of how the money was disbursed.

They were also required to furnish the commission with prove of ownership of the Lands.

The families were paid GH¢ 138 million as compensation.

The sole Commissioner wondered how they were able to demarcate the flooded area for compensation to be paid.

Asked how they made the claims for compensation, they responded that one Nana Astena Mensah assisted and encouraged them to do so.

Meanwhile, efforts by the commissioner to bring Nana Astena Mensah to answer questions relating to the matter have so far proved futile.

The families were represented by Nana Nsianya, Nana Obuiman, Nana OfosuOkofrobour, Nana Kadewura, and Kwame Ananey.
