United Nations Security Council Condemns Deadly Attack in Mali

The UN Security Council has condemned an attack on a UN peacekeepers' camp in northern Mali's Kidal in which a Senegalese peacekeeper was killed.
It "condemned in the strongest terms the targeted attack against a United Nations Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in Mali (MINUSMA) camp in Kidal, Mali, on 7 October 2014, in which one Senegalese peacekeeper of MINUSMA was killed," a council statement said referring to the UN peacekeeping mission in Mali.
Council member states "called on the Government of Mali to swiftly investigate this attack and bring the perpetrators to justice and stressed that those responsible for the attack shall be held accountable," it added.
The council also urged UN member states to "ensure that measures taken to combat terrorism comply with all their obligations under international law, in particular international human rights, refugee and humanitarian law."
The attack comes just days after nine UN soldiers, all from Niger, were killed in the north-eastern desert when they were targeted by armed men on motorbikes in an attack claimed by a jihadist with links to Movement for Oneness and Jihad in West Africa (MUJAO).
The Malian government is in negotiations with six armed groups to bring peace to northern Mali.
