“The people in the African-American communities and other oppressed communities are fed-up with the violence from the police," a journalist in Detroit says.
The recent death of a young African-American man in Baltimore, Maryland, while in police custody represents the overall “oppressive conditions” of black people in the United States, a journalist in Detroit says.
“The people in the African-American communities and other oppressed communities are fed-up with the violence from the police, with unequal living conditions, with the theft of billions of dollars in social wealth among the African-American people,” said Abayomi Azikiwe, editor of the Pan-African News Wire.
The majority-black city of Baltimore has been the site of daily demonstrations since the death of 25-year-old Freddie Gray, who died of a severe neck injury on April 19, a week after he was arrested by Baltimore police.
The protests, which at times turned violent, were seen as symptomatic of broader challenges in the United States, where African Americans and other minorities are frequently subject to police brutality and racial profiling.
“The situation in Baltimore was not isolated; it was sparked by the death of young 25-year-old Freddie Gray, but Freddie Gray was merely a situation where he represented the overall oppressive conditions of African Americans in the United States,” Azikiwe told Press TV on Monday.
He said blacks face a host of shortages in their communities, including the lack of affordable housing and clean running water, which creates “mass indignation and anger.”
“This is a national problem and unless it’s addressed as a national problem, it will continue, and as long as it continues, it will hamper and even retard the development of the United States and also interrupt any type of social peace or social stability in this country.”
